Fifth Grade Book Trailers!

The Fifth Grade students read a great selection of books this year. They used an online application called Animoto to create book trailers, or short videos that introduce their books.

From the folks at Reading Rockets, here’s a great site that helps families explore reading adventures for their children. The free resources from Start with a Book include favorite themes such as dinosaurs, building, animals, sports, superheroes and music and include great themed reading adventure packs. Children can have fun while strengthening their reading skills. The flyer below contains more information as well as the site’s web address. Have fun reading & enjoy the rest of the summer!

 Welcome to the lazy, hazy days of summer! In between all your fun in the sun, take time to relax with a great book. If you’re looking for some suggestions for books to read this summer, here are some good places to look:

 Summer Reading Lists 2014-Association for Library Service to Children
 At this site, you can find three different full-color brochures of annotated lists that you can print out. Three Summer Reading book lists are  available for K-2nd, 3rd– 5th and 6th-8th grade students.

The link below is to a collection of inspiring children’s books that are noteworthy for their meaningful messages. The lists were compiled by author Julie Handler, who is the co-founder of Positively Positive, an organization whose goal is “to bring uplifting voices and messages to our community every day. Book Review: Pete the Cat, Rocking in My School Shoes

 Pete the Cat, Rocking in My School Shoes is our new favorite here at school.  This lively picture book by author-musician Eric Litwin with illustrations by James Dean is perfect for the beginning weeks of school.  The text invites readers to sing along as they see Pete discover the library, the lunchroom, and the playground.  Pete’s a cat who keeps his cool all day long.  Even though he’s experiencing these school places for the first time–is he worried? Goodness, no! 

A bonus to this great book is the free story and song that can be downloaded here.  Warning: be prepared to have this catchy song in your head all day long.  But as Pete says, “it’s all good!”

Be sure to check out the bulletin board outside of our library to see the great school shoes decorated by students.

This book is about a boy named Brian. He is working at his dream job as the batboy for the Detroit Tigers. When his all-time favorite player, Hank Bishop joins the Tigers, it gets even better. But Hank is not as nice as he seems. He falls into a huge slump, and Brian offers to help him, despite the mean things that Hank says to him. Will Hank finally get out of the slump thanks to the batboy? You will have to read to find out.
